Cooking Terminology Explained
Read our frequently asked questions about the technology our products offer.
What is Multifunction?
Multifunction sounds complicated, but it’s really not. It gives you, with a simple turn of a dial or press of a touch-display, a selection of different heating methods so you get perfect results with any recipe. You’ll find lots of options such as fan cooking, conventional heat, grilling with the fan, with some ovens also offering great options such as a pizza function which crisps the base while leaving the topping juicy and succulent.
What is a Fan Oven?
Fan cooking gives you even heat, is perfect for baking and roasting, and you can cook at lower temperatures. You can even cook savoury and sweet dishes together without the flavours mingling and ruining your efforts. Some models from premium brands such as Bosch, Neff, Siemens and Smeg offer advanced versions such as Neff’s CircoTherm and Smeg’s Circulaire with Bosch’s 4D HotAir offering even heat over four cooking levels.
What are Auto Programmes?
Auto Programmes such as Bosch AutoPilot let you select the programme you want from the list in the menu, and simply enter the weight of your food, with the oven then taking care of the cooking mode, temperature and cooking time to give you perfect results with hardly any effort.
What is Added Steam?
Some premium ovens offer an added steam function which prevents food from drying out. For instance, the function adds just the right amount of steam at the right moment to your bread as it bakes, so the crust is deliciously crispy while the inside remains fluffy and light.
What is a Wi-Fi Connected Smart Oven?
Smart ovens give you access to your oven from anywhere using your smart device. For instance, premium brands Bosch, Siemens & Neff use their Home Connect app so you can control the oven remotely, and even download recipes with the app, transferring settings to the oven so you get delicious results with the most challenging dishes. You can also control the oven with your voice with Amazon Alexa for the ultimate in convenience.
What Cleaning Options are Available?
Nobody enjoys cleaning their oven. The good news is that help is at hand. Easy Clean enamel interiors are durable and prevent food from sticking, making cleaning less of a chore. Smeg offer a Vapour Clean option on some models which uses steam to loosen grease and grime while catalytic oven liners absorb grime and then burn it off as the oven heats up. The ultimate though is Pyrolytic Self-Cleaning which super-heats the oven to turn grease and burnt on food to ash which you can just wipe away with a cloth.
What is Induction?
Induction hobs use electromagnets to heat up just the base of your pans, not the surrounding area. This means no energy is wasted, making induction hobs rapid and energy efficient, saving you time and money. Induction hobs are safe too as they only heat up when they sense cookware on top. Premium brands such as Bosch, Neff and Siemens produce hobs with flexible zones. For instance, you can combine two small zones to make a larger zone, so you can use your bigger pans. There are even induction hobs with integrated downdraft cooker hoods to save space in your kitchen by doing away with the need for a separate hood.
Why Do I Need a Cooker Hood?
Extractor hoods help to keep your kitchen fresh and clean by getting rid of unpleasant steam and odours. There are lots of great options such as chimney hoods which are fitted to the wall, integrated hoods which are built into a unit, island hoods which attach to the ceiling above your kitchen island and even hoods that are built into induction hobs to save space.
What is Built In?
Built in appliances are integrated within your kitchen furniture to achieve a seamless look. You can have your oven built under the work surface or higher up in a column for easy access.
